STAHL's new LED torch 6141/6

LED torch for hazardous areas

Also in the oil & gas industry, the popularity of LED lights have not gone unnoticed. The new small explosion proof torch with LED lamps from STAHL is ideal for maintenance purposes in the hazardous area. It’s not new that the LED energy efficient is, however that it is used in a torch, that IS new!

The torch is available in two types. A 3 Volts design for Zone 1 and 2, and a 6 Volts design for Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Both torches work with batteries.

Several accessories are available. However, the fibre-optic top piece is unique. Even the smallest and most inaccessible areas can be highlighted this way.

Remote Control Panels for reciprocating compressor

ELECTROMACH received the order to design 5 complete remote control panels for controlling 10 reciprocating compressors.

Reciprocating compressor

A reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is a positive-displacement compressor that uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure.
The intake gas enters the suction manifold, then flows into the compression cylinder where it gets compressed by a piston driven in a reciprocating motion via a crankshaft, and is then discharged. We can categorize reciprocating compressors into many types and for many applications. Primarily, it is used in a great many industries, including oil refineries, gas pipelines, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants and refrigeration plants.

A141 Siren

A141 Disaster warning Siren

As you might know, at 12 o’clock sharp on the first Monday of the month, the alert systems are tested nationwide in the Netherlands. Not only for testing purposes, but also to keep the alert system in the public consciousness.

The new A141 disaster warning siren, the most powerful device ever produced by the company, is especially designed for these situations. The siren is ideal for usage on large industrial and petrochemical sites and for civil defence requirements. Multiple internationally recognized alarm tones can be generated, including fire, security and civil defense alert as well as COMAH (SEVESO II) toxic gas alarms and disaster warming for flood, tsunami and other severe weather conditions.

Risks of Mechanical Ignition Sources

Since 2006, companies working with hazardous substances have to meet the requirements of the ATEX 137 directive. According to this directive, employees have to be able to work safely in areas with a risk of an explosion.  The employers are obliged to take measurements preventing explosions.

The company has to assess and analyze the security risks and take the necessary action. Purchasing certified equipment alone is not enough. The responsibility for the integral safety has to be guaranteed by the employer, not the manufacturer.

According to the ATEX 137 companies also have to evaluate the risks of non-electrical equipment, mostly mechanical equipment, as a potential ignition source, for example jammed hot bearings of pumps, hot surfaces, static electricity and mechanical sparks.

Minimised costs, better connection options, easier maintenance

New couplers for fieldbus installations in zones 1 and 2

Minimised costs, better connection options, easier maintenance:

R. STAHL has extended its range of field device couplers, adding two new models for zone 2 installation and one new zone 1 model with detachable terminals. Advantages of the new devices are better cost-efficiency and easier maintenance.

The first new device is the zone 2 Ex i FDC (Field Device Coupler), an Ex i fieldbus barrier especially designed for installation in zone 2. The unit allows users to connect up to 8 intrinsically safe FISCO-compliant fieldbus devices from zone 1. Compared with a zone 1 fieldbus barrier, this new solution achieves savings of up to 20 %.

Electrostatic charge (ESC)

Electrostatic charging

Static electricity occurs in almost any business. It is caused by poor adhesion of electrically conductive materials. The electrostatic charge (ESC = Electrostatic Charging) of persons and objects are difficult to recognize, however the discharge can be spectacular (ESD = Electro Static Discharge). We all know the unpleasant shocks that can be felt when getting out a car or touching a door handle. Most discharges are harmless to people and goods. However, electrostatic discharge can also cause fire, explosion or disruption and / or damage to electronic equipment.

An electrostatic discharge has sufficient energy to ignite or explode a flammable liquid or gas. The required ignition energy to realize a fire or explosion depends on the type of substance, concentration, temperature and humidity.
